CBD Oil vs. Hemp Oil: What is the Difference?

The terms CBD and hemp oil are commonly used interchangeably which leads to confusion to whether they are the same but they are in fact very different

Hemp oil alone may not necessarily contain CBD, because it’s made by cold-pressing hemp seeds. CBD oil, on the other hand, is created by actually extracting the CBD compound from the hemp plant. The confusion arises because broad-spectrum hemp oil is hemp oil extract that contains CBD, other cannabinoids, flavonoids, terpenes, and fatty acids working in sync with your body—but not all hemp oil is broad spectrum.

CBD Oil 

Cannabidiol or CBD is the second most common cannabinoid after THC, and has several health benefits. Unlike THC, it is non-psychoactive.   • Synthetic cannabinoids, which are manufactured in laboratories
  • Endocannabinoids, that our bodies naturally produce

CBD oil was recently legalized in the United States with the Hemp Farming Act of 2018 -- a U.S. law passed that removes hemp from Schedule I controlled substances to make it legal in all 50 states as an agricultural commodity. It is now used in a range of well-being needs such as sleep, calming and mood supporting amongst others It is important to note that CBD is often combined with terpenes, amino acids, and other essential vitamins and minerals when it is labeled as broad-spectrum. There is also full-spectrum CBD, which includes all the cannabinoids that you’d normally find in CBD (which means that it includes THC), and Isolate, which includes only the pure CBD and nothing else. 

Hemp Oil 

Hemp seed oil is an oil produced by cold-pressing hemp seeds that are high in antioxidants, omega-3, and 6 fatty acids, but it typically does not contain CBD or other phytocannabinoids. 

Hemp seed oil has been used for many decades in cooking and other beauty products. Unlike CBD, it has always been legal in the United States. This oil is usually used for cooking products like granola but can also be found in beauty and skincare products as well as some types of paint. Quite versatile, isnt it?

When it comes to giving your skin a little TLC, it is hard to go wrong with hemp seed oil. It helps reduce the redness and swelling from daily life without clogging up your pores or causing acne. It also moisturizes your skin and keeps it looking soft and beautiful without the unwanted shininess that too much oil gives it.

Hemp seed oil is also frequently used in food because it contains so many vital nutrients. It is said to add a faint, nutty flavor to your dish, and many cooks really enjoy adding it to their culinary creations. 

The essential fatty acids in hemp seed oil have several health benefits, and its also a fantastic source of protein. For people following a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle, hemp seed oil is a good replacement for the protein that most people get from animal meats and by-products like eggs or milk.

The Difference 

All in all, the main difference between CBD oil and hemp oil is that CBD oil blends will always have CBD in them, and hemp oil does not necessarily have CBD in them. 

CBD oil often refers to CBD isolate, broad-spectrum CBD, and full-spectrum CBD tinctures, drops, and blends. 

Hemp oil is really any oil extracted from the hemp plant, including hemp seeds which do not contain any CBD.

Why the Difference is Important 

The differences between hemp seed oil and CBD oil are in how they affect the body. If you are looking for a way to relax and calm your mind, hemp seed oil doesn’t work. 

A discerning consumer should be wary of companies who are trying to sell them something that their product is not. These companies often call out hemp in their products, but it is not CBD, and therefore won’t have the effect that you’re looking for. 

Companies are dialed into the fact that consumers are eager to enjoy the effects of CBD oil. Because of this, less scrupulous businesses might be willing to mislead that their products include CBD in order to earn more money. Some companies even say that hemp seed oil has CBD in it.

You should also watch out for these factors: 

  • If the product contains cannabis sativa seed oil, that means you are looking at something with hemp seed oil. As noted above, hemp seed oil might be awesome for your skin and to eat, but it does not have any CBD in it.
  • Know the difference between isolate, broad, and full spectrum hemp extract, all of which are rich in CBD. As the name implies, isolate has only isolated CBD and no other plant compounds or cannabinoids; broad spectrum does include other beneficial plant compounds like terpenes, along with some other cannabinoids but not THC; full spectrum contains all beneficial plant compounds and cannabinoids, including a trace amount of THC, which works synergistically with CBD to provide maximum benefit (without causing psychoactive effects). 
  • Check the dosage. Most legitimate products will list the dosage in milligrams of hemp or CBD on the bottle or product package. It is not required that they do so, but when a company does not subscribe to a trend within the industry, you might start to suspect that they have something to hide.
  • Look at other ingredients used in the product. Most companies will add other ingredients to their products instead of just selling straight CBD. Ensure that these ingredients work in tandem with the CBD to promote better health and wellbeing in your body instead of fighting against your natural processes or just acting as fillers.   • Look for independent lab testing for the brand. If a company has nothing to hide, then they will be happy to get the input from licensed scientists and publish those results for their customers to see. These lab reports will show you exactly what is in their products, so you can be sure you are not being taken in by deceptive labeling practices.
    o  A really good brand will test for CBD levels in their products and run full-spectrum tests that measure all of the cannabinoids in the products. You can also check for levels of harmful things like pesticides or other impurities that you don't want to see in your CBD.

Hemp Extract 

A word of caution when it comes to hemp extract: it is not the same thing as CBD. 

Hemp extract can contain CBD, but the concentration percentage is often not listed on less-than-transparent products, and the company may be trying to deceive you by listing a high number of milligrams of hemp extract on the label. If the CBD concentration is low, all of the hemp extracts in the world might not be worth the price.

This is not to say that products with hemp extract are inherently suspicious, but you should still keep a wary eye on the packaging when figuring out how much to pay for a product. 

How much CBD is in the hemp extract depends on the dilution, how the company extracted it from the hemp plant, and the quality of the plant itself. You could be dealing with hemp extract that varies from 5% to 90% CBD, and you can bet those percentages will affect you in vastly different ways.

In Conclusion 

And there you have it. Even though CBD oil and hemp oil come from the same plant species, they are quite different substances with different effects and benefits for your body. 

You should always be on the lookout for deceptive labeling practices. Make sure that you know exactly which ingredients are being used in the products you buy. 

Hemp seed oil does not provide most of the effects sought out in CBD oil (and vice versa), so you should be careful when purchasing products that may not achieve the results you are looking for.
